The Sabbath Rest

Two take-away thoughts from this past Sunday's sermon on the Sabbath rest and it's meaning for today.

First: Both humans and beasts were created on the sixth day, but humans were created for the covenant rest of the seventh day. By nature we share the sign of "6" with the beasts; by grace, we are invited into the sign of the covenant "7". When we refuse to enter into the "7" of the New Sabbath, the New Covenant, we revert to the "6" of our beast-like nature.

Second: We have six days of work, but in order to enter into the covenant rest of the seventh day, we have to stop working. Work is good, work is necessary, work is even holy - but ultimately, no work is adequate enough to bring us into the seventh day of rest with God. To get there, we have to surrender our works.

Enjoy your week!

Jacob
